Memorable Houses from TV and Film

Take a stroll down memory lane with these iconic houses from popular television shows and famous films. Some houses are real homes whereas others were built on set. Take a look at where the houses are and some interesting facts you may not know about them.

Sherlock Holmes: 221B Baker Street
The famous London home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s fictional character Sherlock Holmes. 221B Baker Street is now The Sherlock Holmes Museum which attracts many tourists on a daily basis. However, for BBC1’s modern day Sherlock Holmes they film the exterior at North Gower Street to avoid the tourist crowds and attention.

Downtown Abbey Castle
This castle, home to Lord and Lady Grantham in the TV series, is the real Highclere castle in Hampshire. It is the home of the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon and is open to visitors in spring and summer. This means you can take a look around the filming location of Downtown Abbey. Take a stroll through the grounds and walk around the many grand rooms.

Friends: Monica’s Apartment
Who can forget Monica’s iconic apartment in Friends, with the purple door and walls and the cosy living room/kitchen design. The apartment was created on set as were the other places such as Central Perk and Joey and Chandlers apartment. Fans this year got the chance to see a fully recreated set of Monica’s apartment at Friends Fest which is a celebration of the show. The event is hosted in London, Essex, Yorkshire, Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire.

The Fresh Prince of Bel Air House
As the opening credits of this popular TV series end, we see a large white mansion, which is the home of Will’s Uncle Phil and Aunt Vivian in the show. This house is real and is on Bristol Avenue in Brentwood, it is not actually in Bel Air. The inside of the house was created on set.

Harry Potter: 4 Privet Drive
Number 4 Privet Drive is the fictional home of Harry Potter, where he lived in a cupboard under the stairs before going to Hogwarts. In the first film a house in Picket Post Close was filmed as the Privet Drive house, this was then recreated in the Warner Bros studios for the rest of the franchise. You can now see and go inside the house on the Harry Potter Studio Tour in London.

Home Alone House
The laugh out loud family Christmas film, in which poor Kevin is left home alone and has to fight off some house burglars. The family home Kevin is left alone in is a real house on Lincoln Avenue, Winnetka, in Chicago. The whole house was used for filming including the inside rooms.
