Four Most Scandalous Landlord and Tenant Stories

As with all rentals, there can be issues with tenants from time to time. Some may be late with rent, have pets without asking permission or break items in the flat. However, the following stories take problem tenants to the extreme.

1. Tenants Completely Trash House

A landlord who let out his maisonette released horrifying photos of the mess caused by tenants. The landlord found trails of faeces left in the corridor, mould in the cupboards and piles of rubbish in every room. The tenants are said to have had two dogs and two rats, whose faeces and urine were left in several rooms. The landlord said the smell was so bad that you ‘literally couldn’t breathe when you went into the house’. This cost the landlord over £10000 to rectify.

2. Landlord Discovers 50 Stone Pig in Bungalow!

A landlord was left in shock after discovering a 50 stone pig living in his bungalow. He said on past house inspections he found the fireplace was broken and there was a hole in the garden. The tenant would not let him in one of the rooms which seemed suspicious. It is now clear that they were hiding the pig that had caused the damage. The landlord went back to do a spot check and found the pig asleep on the living room floor. The destruction caused by the pig has cost the landlord £7500 to repair.

3. Tenant Caught Growing Cannabis in House

In 2011 a husband and wife found their tenants had been growing cannabis inside their home. They started legal proceedings to evict the tenants, this cost £2500 and took 5 months. When they entered the house after the eviction they were appalled at the state the tenants had left it in. All the furniture had gone and there was extreme water damage to the floors, ceilings and walls due to the high heat and humidity required for cannabis growth.

4. Tenant Steals Landlords House!

There are many stories of tenants stealing from a rented property; taking furniture, fixtures and fittings. However, this tenant did something dramatic and stole the landlords house. He did this by identity theft – he used the landlords name and managed to re-mortgage the property for £200,000 and then took off with the money.
