The National Housing Federation (NHF) claims that their research shows that people renting homes in the UK pay more than renters anywhere else in Europe. It also states that UK renters have to put aside a higher percentage of their wages as well.
The Average UK monthly rent UK rents now stands at £750 (902 Euros) whereas the average monthly rent across Europe is £400(481 Euros).
40% UK renters’ wages is spent on renting and in Europe it is 28% of the monthly pay packet.
The nearest country in Europe where renters pay nearly as much of their monthly income on rent is Spain. Private renters in the country keep aside 39% of their monthly wages as the average monthly rent is 622 Euros. The German economy is stronger and 600 Euros monthly rent is just 25% of the pay packet.
The Chief Executive of the NHF, David Orr, said: “Not only do British renters face crippling rents, but they have almost no certainty about whether they will be able to stay in their home from one year to the next,”
Across the UK and Northern Ireland, 77% of private renters have moved in the last five years, due to short term tenancies. Whereas across the whole of Europe there is only 43% of private renters that have moved home in the same period.
