A well-known Conservative is venting her frustration at the party’s ‘laboured’ attempt in providing the younger generation with a housing market that they can take their first steps onto, as they are “already having to cough up most of its income to landlords.”
Charlotte Gill, a columnist in the Daily Express and is the deputy editor of the prestigious Conservative Home website, says: “Almost every bit of news about housing these days seems to confirm that younger generations will be renting until … well, forever at this rate.”
In her Daily Express column Gill refers to herself as “an almost 33-year-old”, wrote about the problem that the government faced when trying to increase the housing supply as being scuppered by back benchers, within its own party, who are against building on Green Belt areas.
She also wrote that older generations are supposedly “banking on” younger generations to pay for the pandemic bill, social care and the ominous Net Zero target, she says. “This is a demographic already having to cough up most of its income to landlords.”
Gill’s Express column’s tone is ‘adopted by another Tory, former councillor Sam Clark, who days before Christmas wrote on the Conservative Home website that the government must outlaw investors from making any BTL purchases so as to give younger buyers the chance to own their own home.
Clark wrote: “I would argue a Conservative government should restrict the purchase of properties for the buy to let market. This would be transformative, allowing the UK to once again become a home-owning democracy. It would help young people who find themselves in a vicious cycle of renting and who are unable to save up for a deposit”
