Tenants not checking tenancy agreements

20th Apr 2015

Latest research claims that as more tenants join the private rented sector, because of spiralling house prices, that many are not taking the proper time to study their tenancy agreements. The mortgage and loans provider that carried out the survey said many are later regretting that they did not take more time reading them.

Nearly one in three tenants (32%) surveyed stated, that they had rushed into choosing their rented home and 61% said that there was something that they felt was unsatisfactory in their property.

Approximately 20% of tenants felt their rented property was not big enough and wished that they had taken their time in looking at more rented home that were larger, and 19% complained that they felt cold in their “homes”.

10% of tenants complained about where they lived and 7% wished they had some outdoor space. 8% of those tenants surveyed felt that the worst thing about where they lived was the lack of maintenance undertaken by their landlords.

For those tenants who like their accommodation, 13% are unhappy with their neighbours and 11% feel guilty that at times they cannot afford to their pay rent.

Ian Williams, a spokesman for the company, says: “The rise in demand for rental properties is putting pressure on tenants to rush into taking properties that they spend the rest of their tenancy regretting. If you’re only planning to stay on a short-term lease, you may be less concerned about space or central heating. If you’re planning a long-term let then do some careful thinking about how your situation might change during your tenancy and ensure you have enough space, that the property is in the right location and well-maintained. And importantly, be sure that you can afford it.”
