Starmer And Reeves Rake In Thousands Of Rent Per Month

8th Nov 2024

Despite sidestepping the question of whether landlords are considered 'working people,' the Prime Minister is raking in thousands per month as a landlord.

Reports from the Telegraph and the Daily Mail disclose that Sir Keir Starmer owns a rented family home in London, under ministerial declarations.

However he is not the only landlord cabinet member as Chancellor Rachel Reeves and her husband are reported to earn a combined rental income of £74,000.

The Prime Minister is not the only landlord in the cabinet after reports from the Telegraph revealed Chancellor Rachel Reeves and her husband are reportedly earning a combined rental income of £74,000.

Ministerial documents reveal that after Labour's election victory, the Prime Minister has moved into Downing Street rent-free and is now renting out his north London home.

The Prime Minister his wife Victoria, and their two children previously lived in Kentish Town in a house they purchased in 2004 for £650,000 and is now valued at £2 million.

Comparable homes in the area rent for between £3,000 and £5,000 per month.

The Daily Mail story reports the property has undergone significant renovations which include a loft conversion with two rooflights and a dormer window.

The Financial Times states Labour has the highest number of landlord MPs in Parliament, with 44.
But in spite of its stance of supporting renters, the party faced backlash when Jas Athwal, Labour MP for Ilford South was exposed as a ‘rogue landlord’ as his private rental properties were infested with ants and plagued by black mould.

Mr. Athwal later issued an apology, stating that despite his properties being managed by a letting agent, he would be ending the agent's contract. The Labour MP also admitted that his flats did not have the correct property licences under a scheme he introduced as the leader of Redbridge Council.

Richard Merrick of PIMS, says: “ Sir Tier only gave the MP a sight rebuke and defended him because he was resolving the issues, there is no mention in the press of the MP being fined for not having the proper licenses for his properties.”
