It has just been announced that the Second Reading of Labour’s Renters Bill will take place on October 9th which has been chosen to align with the House of Commons return from its conference season recess.

The Second Reading gives MPS from all parties the chance to  debate the measures with the likely government minister – Matthew Pennycock – to open the proceedings by setting out the case for the Bill and explaining its measures. The opposition will then have the chance respond followed by any of the other MPs who wish to discuss the Bill.

The government will respond to the questions and once these have been handled it will then close the debate.

Amendments cannot be made to the Bill at this stage however many MPs will suggest what changes they will be proposing later on in the parliamentary process. It is highly unlikely that the government will lose the vote at the end of this debate, so the Bill can then progress to the Committee Stage
