Labour’s London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, has faced 

criticism from a Green Party politician in the  capital, as well as indirectly from activist groups.

Khan, who had long supported rent controls and frequently lobbied former Conservative  governments for the authority to implement them in London’s private rental sector, has seemingly  gone silent on the matter ever since Keir Starmer stated he does not want outright rent controls brought in.

A Green Party member of the London Assembly Zoe Garbett has arranged and will be hosting what she boasts as “London’s first Rent Commission” next month.

In her statement. Garbett says: “In 2019, Mayor Sadiq Khan said London needed a ‘rent commission’ to help implement a system of rent controls. Five years later, no such commission exists. Recognising the urgency of London’s housing crisis, Zoë Garbett will bring together renters, renters’ unions, community groups, campaigners, think tanks and academics to discuss what a workable rent control could look like in London.”

Garbett says those attendees who will take part will be known as the London Rent Commission, which in her own words be “a shadow exercise in providing proof-of-concept for one of the Mayor’s unfulfilled campaign promises.”
