From 1st July, Wandsworth landlords in certain areas will be required to obtain specific property licences under both a selective licensing scheme and an additional licensing scheme for houses in multiple occupation (HMOs).
Those who fail to comply could face fines of up to £30,000, with tenants potentially reclaiming up to a year’s rent, Housing Benefit, or Universal Credit if a violation occurs.
Aydin Dikerdem, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “Wandsworth has one of the highest proportions of renters in the country.
“Yet many don’t know where to turn if things go wrong. Our new licensing scheme will give the council more robust powers to inspect properties and take action against landlords who fail to meet their responsibilities.
“This will help us crack down on rogue landlords while offering renters more support and protecting their fundamental rights.”
The announcement comes as Hackney Council unveils similar licensing plans, despite previous challenges in implementation. Under the new scheme, landlords must apply for licences for properties housing three or more tenants from different households, as well as for all private rentals in designated areas such as Furze down, South Balham, and Tooting Bec.
The council asserts that these measures will provide crucial safeguards for renters while ensuring that landlords uphold their obligations.
