A quarter of MPs who make up the twenty strong Renters Reform Bill committee ‘take home’ income from renting out properties or homes and some want to introduce drastic reforms to the private rented sector.
Hansard records declarations of interest from MPs on the committee who have been ‘forensically’ studying every line of the incoming Bill.
It is a legal requirement for MPs to declare their property interests if they ‘take home’ more than £10,000 per year from renting out rooms or properties.
James Gray the chair of the committee who is Tory MP for North Wiltshire apparently at the opening of the proceedings told members of the committee that “I own two buy-to-lets, not that that particularly matters.”
Helen Morgan, the Liberal Democrat MP for North Shropshire, jointly owns a privately let out property the former Conservative housing minister and fully supportive of Eddie Hughes’ PRS reforms.
Conservative MP for North Warwickshire Craig Tracey, lets out a commercial property whilst Labour MP for Brighton Kemptown, Lloyd Russell-Moyle has lodgers at his house.
Anna Firth, Conservative MP for Southend West, jointly owns two properties that are rented out, but held in trust; however the Tory MP for Watford, Dean Russell, is the only private tenant in the committee.
