Stop Press: Rental Reform Bill In Parliament Within One Week

4th May 2023

An industry association close to the government has now revealed when exactly the long awaited Rental Reform Bill will surface in Parliament via a tweet saying: “Secretary of State Michael Gove confirms that we will see the long-awaited Renters Reform Bill next week. A fun week ahead beckons!”

The Bill will include a raft of new reforms for the private rented sector including the long threatened scrapping of Section 21 eviction powers, meekly countered by a supposed strengthening of Section 1 powers. The other ‘known reforms’ include setting up a Decent Homes Standard for the PRS similar to the social housing requirements and a mandatory private landlord register.

The Rental Reform Bill was first promised over three years ago and since then activist groups , charities and political parties have slammed the government for taking so much time to introduce this into Parliament.

The ‘uncovering’ of the Bill will reveal which clauses/measures, if there are any, will be able to become law at short notice by becoming primary legislation as the Bill could take up to 12 months to achieve parliamentary approval; however under special circumstances as detailed in Parliament Act 1911 which was updated in 1949, a Bill can become law without having to go through the House of Lords.
