There has been strong criticism of the decision by a leading letting agents’ organisation to pay Angela Rayner to speak at its summer conference.

Rayner, the former Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Secretary, is scheduled to address the event in June.

Last weekend, the Daily Mail reported that she is receiving a “five-figure sum” for the appearance, while the Conservative Party has publicly objected to her being invited.

The chairman of the Tory party Kevin Hollinrake who founded estate/letting agency prior to becoming an MP – spoke to the Daily Mail: “Only in the world of the champagne socialism could someone resign in disgrace as Housing Secretary over not paying their property taxes and then pop-up weeks later earning thousands for a star turn at a property conference.”

Rayner, widely credited with shaping the Renters’ Rights Act before stepping down from the cabinet, also played a central role in the Planning and Infrastructure Act and in Labour’s commitment to deliver 1.5 million new homes throughout England during this parliamentary term. 

She apparently is by some distance the headline speaker at the trade body’s conference.
