Fergus Wilson, the private landlord tycoon is guilty of assault over boiler argument

20th Apr 2014

The multi-millionaire landlord who wrote to 200 of his tenants on benefits to leave ( reported in the " Immigrant workers wanted not benefit tenants" story in January) was found guilty of attacking an estate agent.

The assault took place when Fergus Wilson with his wife Judith entered into a heated argument about a boiler and then lashed out at the agent  Daniel Wells. Wilson denied assaulting the agent however his claims fell on deaf ears as the judge did not believe his story.

At the court hearing it was heard that that Wilson stormed  into the estate agents in Folkestone on 19 January 2013 shouting at Mr. Wells "Right you little sxxt".

He then landed a blow on Mr. Wells' temple, knocking him off of his chair.

Mr. Wells gave evidence at the hearing and said: "I turned my chair to the right, at which point he struck me on the left side of my head.

"It felt like a closed fist. Mr. Wilson is a large gentleman and maybe not too steady on his feet. He fell towards me and sort of bundled me off my chair and I ended up in the window display.

"Mr. Wilson was still trying to grab at me while I was on the floor. I managed to get to my feet and I noticed Mr. Wilson had his fist raised ready to punch again. I said to him I didn't think that was a very good idea."

The dispute and assault all came about when earlier in the day Mr. Wells contacted Wilson informing that one of his tenants had contacted him telling him that her boiler had stopped working. According to the estate agent Wilson then became very abusive on the phone.

Approximately thirty minutes later Wilson came to the office and assaulted Mr. Wells, Wilson however told the court that Wells had accidentally fallen out his swivel chair. His version was backed up his wife Judith who also stated that Wells had fallen out of his chair by his own fault.

Upon being judged as guilty Wilson was fined £1,650 - £150 of which was awarded as compensation for Mr. Wells.

Previously Wilson had justified his actions of sending out the letter to his benefit tenants saying: "Rents have gone north, and benefit levels south. The gap is such that I have taken the decision to withdraw from taking tenants on housing benefit."
