Police want landlords to help with Sting

6th Nov 2015

South Yorkshire Police are asking landlords and lettings agents to help them in their fight against crime.

They are appealing to the sector to let them use their properties in void periods to help catch criminals.

The force is concentrating its efforts in Sheffield and wants privately rented properties that are empty through the autumn and winter periods and have singled out the Hunters Bar, Broomhill, Crookes and Walkey as prime areas, however it could be interested in other districts within Sheffield.

South Yorkshire Police is asking to use part of a ground floor property and reassures landlords and lettings agents that there will be very little disruption. They can install equipment almost immediately and will just need the properties for short periods of time in what they class as ‘typical void periods’.

The force has said that they may consider the possibility of offering a 'lay' rent for their stay as recompense.

Hayley Cowburn, Marketing Manager PIMS, said: “The housing situation means that there are very few void periods for landlords and lettings agents.

“It is unlikely during the autumn to winter period, that a city’s rented properties will be empty as the student’s have returned and prospective tenants will be keen to move in and existing renters moving out will be extremely low.”
