MP Tables new Bill for landlord/neighbour disputes

6th Mar 2015

The MP for Enfield, Nick de Bois, has put together a new bill that grants stronger powers for the ombudsman, that already steps in and mediates between landlord and tenant's disputes, that it should also help settle any disagreements between landlords and the rented property's neighbours.

If the bill is passed it could help reduce the anti-social actions of "rogue tenants" and less responsible landlords ,who are causing problems for the next door neighbours.

The bill will also will concentrate its focus on landlords of houses with multiple occupancy, some hotels will also fall under the spotlight.

Nick de Bois MP said: “There are simply too many cases  where neighbours who are trying to resolve issues such as distressing anti-social behaviour with some tenants in HMO’s, where the landlords either are unaware of the problems their tenants are causing neighbours, or worse do not care about it.

“Presently it can be very hard to even try to locate and identify landlords when residents are seeking to enlist landlord help in resolving what can be a very disturbing cycle of anti-social behaviour that all too often take too long for authorities to sort out if at all.”

In 2014 it was guesstimated in the capital alone, that there were 195,231 HMOs in London alone, up by 10,000 properties in 2013.
