Landlords are ‘operating illegally’ by using companies such as Airbnb to sidestep rules and taxes warns an MP.
The Business, Innovation and Skills chair wrote to the Mayor of London Mr. Sadiq Khan, informing him that the increasing number of private landlords that have use companies such as Airbnb to let out their properties, are now doing so for over ninety days which will cause a major problem.

MP Ian Wright, the chair of the committee warns Khan that this practise will ‘help to drive up property prices, compounding issues of affordability in the capital.’

Landlords whose properties that are being rented out using Airbnb etc for more than ninety days are breaking the law. It is a requirement that landlords must acquire planning permission if they wish to lengthen the term of these types of contract.

Wright also admitted that many reports stated that the legislation is ‘unenforceable’.

He said that Airbnb amongst others, are helping landlords to 'circumvent tax, food, health and fire safety regulations’, allowing them to enjoy an unfair competitive advantage.
