A comparison service found from its recent survey that around two thirds of tenants believe that landlords should take on the responsibility of mould in their properties, with 40% saying that they would not clean up the mould themselves.


The survey was carried out with 2,000 adults in England on 20 aspects of mould with 64% who had mould in their homes were tenants in private and social housing or in student accommodation.

Those that had mould issues:

•    40% had been drying their clothes indoors.
•    21% had furniture directly against walls.
•    22% keep the doors open in the bathroom and kitchen door open when showering or cooking.
•    12% cluttered up their home.
•    11% admitted to keeping the shower curtain folded.

Sarah Broomfield of the comparison website says: “With the findings that the majority of those who experience mould are tenants, it’s advisable that they contact their landlord to come to an agreement on how to tackle it.”

“Tenants should also be aware that if they pay the heating bills themselves, they have the right to switch energy suppliers to find a cheaper deal.”
