Leeds City Council is looking to renew and expand its current selective licensing system to cover a larger portion of the city.
Last week, the council launched a public consultation on the proposed scheme, aiming to gather a broad range of opinions before making a final decision.
Residents, including landlords, tenants, and other stakeholders, are encouraged to share their views by December 13.
A council spokesperson emphasized the importance of ensuring that privately rented properties in Leeds are safe, warm, and well-managed. The consultation on selective licensing is part of the council’s efforts to improve housing quality across the city.
The spokesperson added, “We want to explore options for protecting and improving the quality of every type of home in our city. I would encourage as many people as possible to let us know their views over the course of the next few months.”
Under the existing scheme, which ends next year, over 4,500 inspections and visits have been conducted, leading to improvements in more than 1,500 homes.
These visits have also allowed council officers to identify and refer over 1,700 cases of non-housing related issues to partner agencies for support.
A decision on the new proposed Selective Licensing scheme in East, South & West Leeds is expected in the first half of 2025.
