Landlords Taking Up Guaranteed Monthly Rent Scheme

15th Sep 2017

family

More than 50 landlords have signed up to Milton Keynes Council's guaranteed monthly rent pledge/scheme to 'house' desperate families needing a roof over their heads.

The council has called the project the 'Secure Lets scheme' in their campaign to encourage private landlords to let their properties and to increase available housing stock for families in need.

The council will be in effect tenants and an extra incentive to entice landlords is they will be paid the monthly rent even during void periods.

On top of this the council has also guaranteed to pay 10% higher than the Local Housing Allowance rate, this is the cap up to which housing benefit is paid. It has been calculated that under the scheme a landlord with a two bedroomed flat could receive £722 per month in the area.

The council will also take on the responsibilities for any normal repairs and that at the end of the agreement the landlord will receive the property back in the same state as it was originally let.

The cabinet member responsible for housing, Councillor Nigel Long, said: “We’re really keen to work with landlords who might not have considered a council tenant in the past, but who want minimal hassle along with the security of a regular income. Having the council as your tenant is a very reliable and low risk way of renting a property.

“The more properties we can offer in MK, the more we’re able to provide accommodation nearer to where people work or where their children go to school, which can make all the difference to how a family copes with the tough situation they find themselves in.”
