HM Revenue & Customs has publicly named and shamed landlords claiming they collectively owe millions of pounds in unpaid tax.
The named landlords are included in a far longer list of people who are alleged to have defrauded HMRC by at least £25,000 in tax and in one case ‘to the tune’ of more than £4m.
On its section of the website listing the ‘rogues gallery’, the Revenue department does specify that although each case names an induvial and their address, there are some provisos.
In such cases a named individual may well change their behaviour, may have moved from the published address, or the business whilst under control of the fraudster may have recently changed hands to a perfectly legal owner.
HMRC’s named and shamed list includes the categories - ‘rental property’ or ‘property developing’ or ‘property tax advising’.
HMRC operates a strict code of conduct when publicising names and financial details of tax defrauders as defined by those who have been fined for deliberately making serious errors in their tax returns and are only named after a formal tax investigation has been completed and penalties issued.
