Labours past policies for private rented sector shows direct u-turn

5th Aug 2014

Nowadays it is becoming increasingly hard to remember which policies formed the political landscape four years ago.

In 2010 when Labour was in power they published a consultation document called “Investment in the UK private rented sector.”

Surprisingly rent controls and long term tenancies were viewed as being  potentially damaging to the sector as it reported that: “The PRS allows households to move easily both within and between regions, leading to a more efficient allocation of labour and skills. The corollary of this is that if the supply of PRS tenancies were to become limited, those needing uncertain or short periods of accommodation in a particular area would find themselves severely disadvantaged.”

Labour MP Emma Reynolds, Shadow Housing Minister, recently gave a speech once again reiterating their policies for rent control and longer term tenancies once in power.
