The Labour has just made public that it will be launching what it calls a major review of the PRS headed up by the leader of a London council.
As of yet there has been little detail released of the intended review but was announced on Saturday (28th January) by Labour’s Lisa Nandy the shadow Levelling Up Secretary.
Stephen Cowan the leader of Hammersmith and Fulham council is in charge of the review.
Nandy says: “Housing isn’t a market. It’s a fundamental human right.
“That’s why Labour has set out plans to tilt the balance of power back towards tenants through a powerful new Renters’ Charter and a new Decent Homes Standard.
“Security in your home, the right to make your home your own and most of all the right to live in a home fit for human habitation is non-negotiable.
“I’m delighted that Steve is going to drive forward this work so that we are ready to go on day one.”
Over the last few months Labour has repeatedly highlighted reforms it wants to introduce
Last year in October at Labour’s annual conference Sir Keir Starmer told attendees that when it comes to buying homes: “Buy to let landlords and second home owners will not get in first in front of local communities.”.
Nandy has promised that when Labour gets into power within 100 days she will put in place a Renter's Charter:
· Ending Section 21 evictions
· Reduce landlords’ eviction powers if tenants fall into arrears
· Four months’ notice periods
· Introduce the much discussed deposit ‘passport’ for tenants when moving properties
· Mandatory for landlords to accept pets
· Tenants given the right to make ”reasonable alterations to a property”
· Introduce a national register of landlords.
· A legislated decent homes standard for the private rental sector.
