Labours Announces Next Month’s Launch Of Party’s ‘Bold’ Reforms For PRS

9th Apr 2024

A prominent Labour website says that next month will be exciting as the party will be unveiling a raft of proposed reforms for the PRS – however a caveat ‘flip-flop’ is included as its reports the measures are not guaranteed to be adopted as party policy.

LabourList says Stephen Cowan, the Labour leader of Hammersmith and Fulham council is responsible for compiling the proposed reforms

The website also reported that Lisa Nandy the then-shadow housing secretary   asked Cowan to compile the report which will be made public after the May 2 local elections.

LabourList says: “One source stressed it was an independent review, while another predicted it would include some bold proposals. Labour is expected to consider it in detail once it has been published … One source told LabourList they did not expect Cowan’s report to recommend rent controls.”

Last week London Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan announced his concept of “rent control homes”  for 6,000 homes to be built across London and funded from the public purse, which would be subject to rent capping at the level of local key workers’ wages.

He wants to be a “renters’ champion” spending up to £4m on a “licensing hub” to fund councils in helping renters,  funding  groups like renters’ unions, investing in advice for renters, and supporting renters to get rent rebates. He also wants to closely work alongside a future Labour government to “ensure licensing powers can be used to take action against the poorest-performing landlords”.
