Over the last thirty years the proportion of households privately renting their homes has more than doubled.
In 1985, 30% of households were renting their homes from public landlords and only 9% from private landlords. This year it is reported that just 9% of households are renting from public landlords and 22% are now renting privately.
The report from where the figures came from, was undertaken by ResPublica and is a social study that examined Margaret Thatcher’s society goals. It also reported that in 1985, 61% of British households were homeowners. This figure continued to rise during the 1990’s and when home prices increased in the 2000’s it declined. It also found that the proportion has now peaked in line with ownership of 30 years ago.
The report also studied share ownership per person and car ownership. It summarized that: “Lady Thatcher’s vision of an economy with widespread ownership has not yet been realised.”
