Nearly half of tenants don't bother with insurance

1st Jan 2015

A piece of research shows that only 6% of private homeowners fail to insure their home contents.......... whereas a staggering third of tenants are uninsured.

The Insurance Company that carried out the survey received the feedback that 44% of tenants felt that they would not be able to fund the costs of home contents' insurance, even though the price charged is minimal. 26% who took part in the survey felt that as they were tenants then perhaps misguidedly, there was no need to have an insurance policy. 16% said that they were prepared to take the risk.

Some 29% stated that they did not take out a policy simply because they did not rate the contents as being valuable. Surprisingly the research highlights the fact that contents, on the whole, of a rented home are worth up to £16,644 whereas homeowners' contents are twice as much as the figure comes in at £31,651.

One in ten renters stopped insuring their contents over the last ten years with nearly half of these stating that they did so to save money. 20% renters stopped their policy when moving to an area that had lower crime levels and 19% did so because they were or are unemployed. 14% had stopped insurance upon installing their own alarm and security measures.
