The Green Party is now proposing that private renters must be given powers to make landlords upgrade their rented ‘homes’ energy efficiency.
The party proposes that the scheme should be part of a new £145 billion investment which renters can force landlords to apply for either by being given low interest government backed loans or better still grants, so their homes energy efficiency achieves a higher EPC rating.
The co-leader of the Green Party, Carla Denyer, claims the scheme will "make every house, flat and bedsit a proper home".
She announced the proposed scheme at the Green Party of England and Wales’ recent annual conference.
Grants will be aimed at impoverished households and other owners will be offered the chance to supply for property-linked loans which will in effect be paid off "via savings from reduced energy bills".
It also wants rent controls in England already in force across Scotland with the Greens and SNP alliance, so that landlords will not pass the repayment costs onto tenants.
Carla Denyer says: "Solutions to the climate crisis are the same as the solutions to the cost-of-living crisis. Every home should be properly insulated and free from damp and mould - we would give renters the legal right to demand this from their landlords."
And of course the Greens dismisses its proposed scheme would force landlords out of the private rental sector and curtly says it will be far better for landlords benefitting from lower borrowing costs, which can only improve their properties value with better energy efficiency capabilities.
