Government Latest Online Guidance for Councils in Fight against Rogues

21st Apr 2019

Heather Wheeler MP, the Housing Minister, has just announced that there is the latest online guidance to back up councils' crackdown on rogue landlords.

There are now two new guidance documents uploaded, one for all authorities' enforcement teams and the second for landlords and tenants. The government has published the guidance information as part of their continuing commitment and campaign to improve standards and protection for tenants; within their ongoing reforms of the private rented sector.

Councils' enforcement officers' main priorities are to ensure that private renting tenants in their area have secure, safe and fit for habitation 'homes' to live in. The guidelines will help the authorities' enforcement teams maximise the powers that are available to them for protecting tenants.

Part of the new support comes in the form of a digital enforcement package with online learning modules for any of the enforcement teams or officers who did not attend the recent national programme event.

The tenants and landlords guides set out exactly what the responsibilities and rights are for both parties; there are also links to the government's in-depth guidance on legislation. The new guidance will complement the previous government's support for landlords and tenants which include the “How to rent” and “How to let” guides.

Heather Wheeler MP says: “This package of support for those working on the frontline of the private rented sector will ensure they are fully equipped to make use of any new powers which can improve the lives of tenants trapped in poor quality accommodation.

“This, along with our further guidance for tenants and landlords on their rights and responsibilities, builds on the ongoing work which sets out to make renting fairer and more accessible for all whilst also ensuring that everyone has a home which is safe and secure.”
