The Daily Telegraph has just uncovered a downside in Rishi Sunak’s electric heat pump grant freebie.
He recently announced that the government is giving away extra cash to homeowners and landlords in its scheme to enticing them to switch from gas boilers to electric heat pumps, and instead of being awarded £5,000 towards the change it is now increased up to £7,500.
This ‘increased’ support package was one of the measures which is a ‘relaxing’ of energy efficiency restrictions.
But the Telegraph has now uncovered the fact that although homeowners grants for gas boilers to heat pumps has increased by 50% the total funding still remains the same at £150m.
This now means that numbers of people being awarded the increased grant has been drastically reduced by a third down from 30,000 to 20,000 if the £150 million total fund remains unchanged.
Part of the government’s net zero target scheme was to stop gas boilers being installed in new builds by 2025 and from 2033 all gas boilers would start to be phased out. In Sunak’s highly controversial speech he promised/pledged that no one single person would have to replace a working gas boiler with a heat pump if they did not wish to.
However people will have to make the switch when they are due to change their boiler.
One major positive change for landlords in the Prime Minister’s speech was that he has scrapped the regulation which required rented properties to have a minimum EPC rating of C by 2025 for all new tenancies and by 2028 for all rented properties.
