The Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service have recently announced that all private landlords in the county can apply for free smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
Hopefully everyone is aware of the new laws coming into force shortly, where by law all landlords must install a smoke alarm on each floor of any rented apartment and a carbon monoxide detector in any room that has a solid fuel appliance. Wood burners, open fires and boilers are all included in the category.
If a landlord is caught not following this procedure could be fined up to £5,000.
The government has given the fire and rescue service more than a thousand carbon monoxide detectors and thirteen thousand smoke alarms for landlords who are housing vulnerable tenants.
Steve Foye, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We are delighted that the Government has brought in these new laws which will improve the safety of families and stop dozens of people from losing their lives to fire each year”
Richard Merrick, PIMS said: “This is good news for landlords in Hampshire and we believe there are similar giveaways in other areas.
“It may be a good idea for all landlords to contact their local fire services and find out if they are involved in the same initiative.”
