Labour-run Newham council has just made public its past five year’s history of enforcement actions and fines against PRS landlords.
It proclaims that between 2018 and 2022 which included the pandemic period that saw ‘reduced’ action due to lockdown, the council banned 84 landlords from being able to or involved with the running of licensed properties; sent 6,447 enforcement notices to landlords; undertook around 2,000 breach of licence investigations; issued 342 penalty fine notices and imposed fines of £5,000 upwards to £30,00 over the five year period.
Besides issuing these figures it has also uploaded details of its latest licensing scheme started on June 1st which superseded Newham’s previous licensing regime that finished in February.
42,000 properties should be licensed in the borough of which 70 per cent could be visited by officers or subjected to audits of some nature.
Since Covid appeared on the scheme apparently the team undertook an average of 800 licensing compliancy inspections per month checking safety, management and property conditions.
However the council is now enticing landlords into the new licensing scheme by saying they are still able to take advantage of an early-bird discount. Those who successfully apply for the Selective Licence by Friday July 14th will pay the discounted fee of £400 which is nearly a 50 per cent saving off of the £750 full cost.
