Coventry council has just sent out a plea to PRS landlords to help it meet its housing responsibilities.
The council has set up a Let’s Rent Coventry initiative where landlords can sign up to a 12 or 24 month agreement and will be given a five week rent as a deposit and guaranteed rent for the agreed period.
The council says that it has already placed 55 families since May 2020, into private rented accommodation under local housing allowance rates and claims that many landlords have already entered into the scheme.
It is asking landlords with one to five bedroom units which can be furnished or unfurnished. All properties submitted by landlords will be thoroughly checked and inspected and made sure that there is the necessary accompanying certification to be passed.
The council’s accommodation officer, Shannon Darcy-Bromell, says: “Once we help a customer find a new home, they are often relieved that they have found a home that is safe, comfortable and affordable.
“It’s very satisfying, because some families have been homeless or have been in temporary accommodation and want to start planning for the future. Being in a home that feels more permanent makes a big difference.”
Richard Merrick of PIMS, says: “The interesting points to ponder is what happens after the initial term of agreement ends, will it then be up to the landlord to deal with the finances directly with the tenant and will the local housing allowance rate be fit for purpose at the end of the initial agreement/contract?”
