A couple who defrauded the DWP by claiming over £100,000 on benefits by claiming that they were tenant and landlord, have both received a custodial sentence.
The mother told the council that her partner and father of her child, whilst living together, was her landlord.
Social Media caught them out when they posted pictures from a Caribbean Cruise, costing £5,000, was posted on their Facebook page. Because of the pictures, the couple could hardly argue that they were anything but a family.
The couple were each given a 12 month sentence at Liverpool Crown Court.
Judge Robert Warnock, whilst relaying the sentence, said the couple were "motivated by personal greed and a desire for status".
When they lived as a family they produced fake tenancy agreements.
The mother, during a five year period, had claimed for and received £89,000 in hand outs made up of child tax credit, council tax and housing benefits.
There will be a further court hearing where the Crown Court will decide upon "the proceeds of crime", which could determine how much they are ordered to pay back.
