The Guardian newspaper recently run a report that states South East and London councils are offering private landlords “inducements” of up to £4,000, to take on homeless families, due to the lack of social housing
Westminster Council is paying out to landlords as much as £4,000 and Tower Hamlets is even giving landlords £2,500 for one bed roomed homes and much more for larger private rented homes.
The reports also says that :“In Haringey in north London and the nearby borough of Barnet , private sector landlords are being offered one-off payments of up to £3,000 if they sign up to a two-year tenancy. Southwark council in south London is offering up to £2,000,” says the report.
Overall the property industry is strongly against the Tory’s election proposal of widening the Right-to-Buy scheme to include Social Housing stock.
Heather Osborne, who wrote the article said that many councils are having to resort to cash incentives to put a roof over the heads of their Social Housing families :
Osborne wrote “The biggest payments are offered to landlords who take on tenants put forward by the council on long-term contracts. The rent for these tenancies is paid in housing benefit claimed by the tenant. Other schemes exist for landlords who lease their properties to councils for up to five years. In both cases, tenants would otherwise have to be housed by councils in temporary accommodation such as B&Bs.”
