Worthing Landlord Sean Adelphie of an HMO (House of Multiple Occupancy)) is over the moon after the council removed the ‘restrictive’ planning constraints a ‘great result’ at a planning meeting.
Before the removal was agreed it had meant that his 25 bed roomed property in a suburb of Worthing, had only temporary permission to be rented out as 25 bedsits and also the landlord had to live in the property at the same time.
The reason why this ruling was in effect was that there were concerns over the new changes of occupancy as originally it had been used as a care home. The council felt that the area's character could be affected by the influx of new types of tenants.
Mr. Adelphie said: “Although I’m the landlord I don’t have any management responsibilities, I employ three management agencies who are the first point of call for the tenants. All tenants are in full time employment and are respectful of others.”
He and his mother jointly purchased the property 1979 and ran it as a care home until 2007.
Councillor Michael Cloake said: “I think it’s testament to the success of this so far that there’s no objections in here. In the three years it’s been running it seems to have been run very professionally.”
The planning committee voted unanimously voted to allow Mr. Adelphie to manage the bedsits from a different address and continue to use the building as a multiple occupancy property.
