A council is boasting about its licensing regime as “hundreds of residents have been made safer in their homes.”
Sheffield council is adamant that the scheme has been successful in removing safety hazards from around 500 properties between 2018-2023.
The Selective Licensing introduction to the south and south east sections of the city centre has now made landlords undertake work to remove safety hazards that are part of the licencing’s conditions to ensure tenants are kept safe.
Over the last five years 472 licenced private rental properties were inspected which found 492 safety hazards in 46 per cent of the ‘homes’ and 29 per cent had fire safety issues.
The council says with the safety hazards rectified nearly 800 people are living in safer homes.
Over the five years 65 financial penalties were served on landlords with seven cases taken to court under the Housing Act 2004.
A spokesperson for the council says: “This was a complicated scheme that required a lot of hard work to get these successes. It’s brilliant to know this has resulted in people being safer in their homes.
“Safety at home is vitally important and as well as the obvious physical benefits can also add to people’s wellbeing with the knowledge their homes are more secure.
“We’d like to thank all those we worked with to make this possible. I’m proud of the work that has been done and proud of the successes they have achieved.”
