Conservative's Manifesto Criticised for Zero Encouragement to Landlords

5th Dec 2019

A trade association is furious with the Conservative's party manifesto saying that there is nothing within it to support existing landlords or entice new ones into the private rented sector.

The ever hopeful Boris Johnson is 'flag waving' his intentions to “empower” tenants if the party returns to power.

The association slams Tory claims that their private rented sector plans for renters will bring a “greater peace of mind”.

A spokesperson for the trade association, said: “The Conservatives claim that the changes announced in the manifesto will ‘create a fairer rental market’, but fairer for whom?

“To say that we are disappointed that the Conservatives have pledged to continue with their plan to abolish Section 21 is an understatement. Despite a robust lobbying campaign on behalf of the two million landlords in the UK, the Conservatives seem hell-bent on continuing to punish hardworking and law-abiding landlords.”

The association is also wary of the Tory's intended commitment to 'fasttrack' a new scheme to allow tenants to 'switch' their deposits from one landlord to another when moving home, which has been called 'passporting'.

The proposed Lifetime Deposit scheme in theory will allow tenants not having to save up for a deposit, as their existing one will be 'ported' across to the new landlord to secure a new 'home'.

He continued: “We will reserve judgment on the so-called “lifetime deposit”. The Conservatives has yet to confirm what this will look like or how this will work in practice.

“We cannot get behind a manifesto that so badly cripples landlords’ ability to run a functioning letting business.”
