A specialist buy-to-let lender claims its latest research shows that Brexit uncertainty is the major cause of the UK housing market slump. The survey is regularly carried out with 200 mortgage advisors and the data is inputted into its Financial Adviser and Confidence Tracker Index.

The mortgage advisers have predicted that property price growth will remain slow and demand for homes is very unlikely to increase during Q1 2019; they believe this has been caused by the unstable economic and political situation.
In the last six months of 2018, 57% of mortgage advisers blamed Brexit on the slump in demand for properties, 56% felt it had caused a downward pressure on property prices and 44% said that the uncertainty had caused a drop in houses being put on the market.
Only 5% reported that they had not experienced any change at all in the market.
John Heron, managing director of the lender, said: “Brexit uncertainty is causing a measurable slowdown across the UK housing market as potential buyers and sellers adopt a ‘wait and see’ approach.
“As political negotiations move into the final phase, hopes are high for a workable solution and a much-anticipated Brexit bounce.”
