Earlier this year it was announced that Fergus and Judith Wilson had put up their private renting property empire on the market; and that there was considerable interest from Chinese investors.
The Kent ‘empire’ has been sold to the tune of £250 million plus to a foreign consortium, an exact figure has not been released. As reported previously the Wilsons first stared renting out homes in the early 1990s and became so successful that they were buying several buy-to-let properties every day.
They have sold up to fund an enjoyable retirement and are keen to re-assure their tenants that the sale will not ‘adversely’ affect the tenants present rent, whatever that means.
Mr Wilson has always had a ‘colourful’ personality which courted controversy especially when he stated in the press that he would not accept any more tenants on benefits.
In the recent statement that was issued to The Guardian, he said: “We reached an agreement today with a consortium of buyers to sell our entire portfolio for a figure exceeding £250m. The consortium is foreign and not of any one specific nationality.”
The statement carried by saying: “Owning BTL became a hobby for Fergus Wilson that simply got out of control. He says BTL is the national hobby and is followed by millions. Whether you are a tenant or an owner occupier or indeed a BTL landlord you have an interest in the letting industry for letting industry is what it is.”
