Generation Rent has the full backing of a veteran MP holding a survey of fifteen questions for private renters in the Labour held constituency.
The charity’s online survey is also asking tenants whether they would like to receive updates from the activist group about their actions and demands for changes of the PRS. It is asking for feedback/answers about living conditions in their rented ‘homes’ and whether the managing agents and landlords are carrying out their legal obligations.
One such example of the survey’s questionnaire asks tenants did they receive all the required documents such as gas safety certificates, How To Rent guide, deposit protection details, EPC levels. EICR electrical condition report etc.
It also asks whether tenants were required to provide evidence of ID and references, if the landlord/letting agent had entered the property without their permission and whether maintenance issues had been resolved promptly.
But there are some serious doubts about the survey’s ‘findings’ inadequacies, as one question regarding the cost of living rises asked tenants to put a cost on some of the increases, which unsurprisingly included energy.
However the question only allowed the response of a figure and not a timescale, so it ‘clouds’ the issue, as tenants fill in a sum without being able to fill in a period of time i.e. a week, a month etc.
The seven minute survey is heavily promoted on the charity’s social media and emphasises this is only for private renters within the Ealing Southall constituency of Virendra Sharma MP.
The seasoned 75 year old MP has been a councillor in Ealing for nearly three decades (28 years) and became MP for Southall in 2007.
