The latest London Rental Standard from the Mayor of Landlord is published today (Wed 28th May). The accreditation schemes lists the required standards that landlords and letting agents must adhere to.
Within one hour a London Assembly member has already slated the schemes by saying that there was little substance and not enough protection for tenants.
London Assembly Member Darren Johnson said: "The mayor of London’s standard gives tenants no real protections against landlords evicting in retaliation for complaints, or against big rent hikes, and fails to ban outrageous letting agent fees,
"He is effectively endorsing six landlord registers that will only cover good landlords. We need regulations to protect tenants from all the rest."
The London Rental Standard is not compulsory, although it will be interesting to see if this remains so as we approach the election campaign. In it the mayor has drawn out 26 standards that are expected from participating landlords, managing agents and letting agents that operate in London’s private rented sector.
